Actually hiked the north shore of Lake Abilene

We started on the south side of the dam and walked to the north shore to where elm creek feeds into the lake.  Pretty nice little hike.  That side of the lake doesn't get much traffic.  Saw lots of beaver sign, spooked some deer, etc.

i took my wife and 2 kids on this hike and we had a good time. the trail runs fairly close to roads and also to campsites in the area. the terrain is very easy to negotiate and the trail is in good very good condition. your not going to get spectacular views from this trail but it is a good place to just get outdoors and relax. i would recommend this hike to anyone who has children who want to kick around in the outdoors.

Early Morning Hike

Hiked the Elm Creek Nature Trail with my kids.  It was a beautiful March morning.  The trail is a very easy hike, fairly level and  I would guess 1.5 to  2 miles.  According to my GPS we hiked a little over 3 miles, however over a mile of our hike was on park roads from our camp site.  The TP&W map is not quite accurate showing the trail.  When you get to the gravel trail go straight across it and continue down the dirt trail.  Although we met no other hikers on the trail, I gave it a 2 for solutude due to the trafic noise we could hear from the nearby highway.   If you are camping in Abilene State Park, I would recommend taking this hike.

I like this trail for slow casual walks in the west texas forest. Nice pond called Buffalo Wallow to stop and enjoy. This trail was a great way to introduce my Trailblazers group (4th - 6th graders) to the local flora and fauna.
