For some reason, after many years of hiking and camping in Texas, I had never been to this park. Apparently this is the case for many people, as I was able to secure campsite reservations here for Memorial Day weekend just a few weeks before the date. This lack of popularity is both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because the park is quiet, uncrowded, and clean. It is a curse because due to low visitorship TPWD had decided to terminate it's lease of the property and will cease to operate it as a state park soon.

That is a shame, because it is a very pretty park with at least 6 miles of well-maintained hiking trails, spacious shady campsites, numerous lighted fishing piers, and lots of wildlife.

There are a variety of trail types. Some are wooded and shady, others are grassy and sunny. All are level and wide. The park has a trail map online that has good descriptions of them on the back. We were amazed that even on Memorial Day weekend, we saw very few other hikers or bikers on any of the trails. It was very quiet and peaceful. A nice breeze coming over the lake even helped to keep us relatively cool on most hikes and while camping. There is quite a bit of wildlife that can be seen here, especially birds.

This is a great park to hike, fish, and camp in. Go see it while you can!
