A nice hike along the southern loop of the trail. With no recent rains, the trail path was in good condition - smooth and packed with no tire grooves. Hiking late on a Monday morning, I was only passed by a half dozen mountain bikers. The only sound heard besides the wind blowing through the trees was a woodpecker or an ocassional distant helicopter or plane.
Much of the trail wound its way through the oak tree groves. The shade of the trees makes a hike in 90-95 degree heat comfortable. A near-contant southerly breeze is a welcomed addition when crossing the open areas too. The undergrowth is thick enough where one can barely see someone on the upcomming switchback. This makes it easy for bikers to sneak up on you if they are quiet.
In some places the trail comes right to the edge of the riverbank with steep dropoffs of over thirty feet. Due to the number of half-exposed roots and some dips in the trail, trekking poles will be quite helpful. There are a few geo-caches hidden in the park, including one specifically for dogs.
