Seismic Wall

I believe this rock cliff is known as the Seismic Wall. It provides a place for some advanced rock climbing. [Barton Creek Greenbelt]

Revenge on Montezuma
Montezuma Peak - 8/4/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3stars Difficulty: 4stars Solitude: 4point5stars
Distance: 9.40 Miles Duration: 6 hours, 4 minutes

I took a hike out past Long Trek Mt to Montezuma Peak since it was the same set of trails I hiked the other day, only Montezuma Peak was a little further in.  Montezuma Peak looked doable from a distance, but once I got close to it I realized it was going to be harder than I thought.  After departing the CDT to begin the frontal assault ascent, there was a lot of loose gravel on an incline that was about 40 degrees so it made footing tricky.  Two steps forward, one step back. Near the top, it became steeper, so I opted to scramble up the rocks instead making it a Class 2 (arguably Class 3 since I had to use all 4 hands and feet) climb.  The views from the top were beautiful, but smoke from wildfires all around the area made visibility poor for things in the distance.  Coming down was tricky since it was so loose, so trekking poles defeinitely helped keep my balance. Another 13er (13,158 ft elevation) bagged!

Another Peak Bagged
Long Trek Mountain - 7/31/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: 2point5stars Difficulty: 2stars Solitude: 4point5stars
Distance: 6.03 Miles Duration: 3 hours, 48 minutes

I hiked to the top of Long Trek Mountain and back.  I started on the Crater Lake trail, but at about 2 miles, I branched south onto the CDT. At 2.7 miles, I left the CDT to begin the easy Class 1 ascent of about 400 feet to the the top of the mountain.  Long Trek is only 12,831 ft high, but it affords great 360 views of Crater Lake below and the surrounding area.  I thought about descending and ascending the nearby Montezuma Peak (a 13 er), but clouds were moving in and I did not want to get caught in rain and lightning.  It turned out to be the right call not to bag Montezuma because the rain started on my way back to the trailhead and thunderstorms soon followed.

Walk around the lake
Shaw Lake Loop - 7/24/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: halfstar Difficulty: 1star Solitude: halfstar
Distance: 1.70 Miles Duration: N/A

My wife and I hiked around Shaw Lake. The water level was extremely low, so the lake was only half it's normal size.  The trail was overgrown and poorly maintained in many spots.  Lots of blowdowns, so instead we hiked along the upper (dry) bank of the lake.

CDT out towards Mt Hope
Lobo Overlook - 7/20/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: 4point5stars Difficulty: 3stars Solitude: 5stars
Distance: 12.09 Miles Duration: 6 hours, 59 minutes

I hiked along from CDT, starting from near the antenna station adjacent to the Lobo Overlook, out towards Mt. Hope.  I felt good, the weather was beautiful, and the wildflowers were in full bloom so I hiked out to a big meadow/park near Spruce Lakes in the vicinity of Mt Hope.  Along the way, I stopped at beautiful Rock Lake (about 4.5 miles in) and had lunch while enjoying the scenery and tranqulity.

CDT to Treasure Mountain
Treasure Mountain - 7/18/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3stars Difficulty: 3stars Solitude: 5stars
Distance: 8.45 Miles Duration: 5 hours, 19 minutes

I hiked along the CDT toward Alberta Peak, but right behind Wolf Creek Ski Resort there is a cut-off trail (Treaure Mountain Trail).  I took this trail and switchbacked all the way down to a OHV road (Wolf Creek Road).  I hiked along this road a bit to find a good place to go off trail and hike up to the ridge close to Treasure Mountain.  From there, I bushwacked through a lot of blowdowns until I reached the base of Treasure Mountain.  From there, it was a 40 degree slop climb up to the summit.  The views from the top were nice, but I didn't stay long because the weather started to turn with rain, graupel, and thunder.
