Lots of Blowdowns
Pagosa Peak - 7/10/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3point5stars Difficulty: 3point5stars Solitude: 4point5stars
Distance: 3.99 Miles Duration: 5 hours, 53 minutes

Pagosa Peak is a prominent mountain near Pagosa Springs.  It is ~12,640 ft in elevation.  Getting to the top is challenging, however, because the informal trail is not a US Forest Serice Trail.  As a result, there is no signage, cairns, blazes, etc.  Furthermore, there is a lot of deadfall that you have to contend with.  There must have been a hundred blowdowns that I had to go over, under or around, which made it much more difficult.  The ascent to the top includes several false summits and there are no switchbacks to the summit.  It's just a frontal assault.  Pretty much a walk-up, but there is some Class 2 srambling required to get up over some rock ledges on the last false summit.  From there, it's another 100 yards or so across an exposed ridge.

Handies Peak via American Basin
Handies Peak - 6/22/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: 4point5stars Difficulty: 3point5stars Solitude: 3point5stars
Distance: 5.70 Miles Duration: 5 hours, 22 minutes

Handies Peak is a 14er. You can hike up it via the American Basin (Class 1) or via Grizzly Gulch (Class 2).  I opted to take the standard route from American Basin.  It was extremely beautiful with wildflowers and a short side trip to Sloan Lake, a natural, high alpine lake with pristine water from the snow melt.  The views from the top of the peak were amazing. You could see for 100 miles in every direction.

Summit of Mt Huron
Huron Peak Trail - 6/16/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3point5stars Difficulty: 4stars Solitude: 1point5stars
Distance: 9.58 Miles Duration: 8 hours, 7 minutes

Since 2017 when I was hiking the Colorado Trail, I've been wanting to hike up Huron Peak but at that time I passed up the opportunity because the day prior I had hiked up 3 14ers in one day (Missouri Mt, Mt Belford and Mt Oxford) and so the next day when I passed the Huron Peak trailhead my legs were sore and in no shape to summit.  Anyways, I was finally happy to get back and tend to some unfinished business.  This hike involved over 3700 ft of elevation gain, so it's a workout.  From the trailhead, you hike up through the trees until it finally levels out above the treeline so about a mile.  But then you have to hike up to the saddle and then up the ridge to the top.  The views from the top are spectacular.  I was even fortunate to see a mountain goat at the summit.  Huron Peak is barely over 14000 ft (14004, to be exact), but it's a 14er nonetheless.  I recommend taking trekking pole. They help on the way up, but are even more helpful on the way down because a lot of the trail dirt is loose and I saw a couple of people without poles slip and fall.  I parked about 1.25 miles from the trailhead because the 4x4 road was rough and I didn't want to damage my vehicle. In hindsight, though, my truck could have gone all the way to the trailhead, shaving 2.5 miles off my hike.  I was exhausted on the way back, so that extra 1.25 miles to my truck was punishing.

Swimming Hole
Paradise Cove - 6/9/2026  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3stars Difficulty: 1point5stars Solitude: halfstar
Distance: 1.12 Miles Duration: N/A

Paradise Cove is a beautiful, secluded swimming hole where you can also rock dive.  It is popular with the younger generations that like to dive off the rocks into the swimming hole.  Day use parking is $6.
