Ray Roberts Lake State Park - Center Loop - 9/28/2008  [View Log Page]
Rating: 2stars Difficulty: 2stars Solitude: 3stars
Distance: 3.00 Miles Duration: 3 hours, 30 minutes
We hiked most of the trail at the Johnson Branch. Normally this might have been a fairly easy hike, but the trail was really badly eroded in some spots. It was very hard to walk on it--I can't even imagine trying to ride a bike on this trail! For the most part we were alone, but we were passed by quite a few mountain bikers. Plus, we ran into Parks & Wildlife staff on golf carts, and listening to those things coming towards you on the trail really kills the solitude. No views of the lake once you get past the campgrounds. Probably won't go back.
A lot of fun

I notice that others have mentioned there was a lot of trash. We barely saw any, so I'm guessing your voices were heard! For the most part, the hike was pretty easy. The Caprock trail was pretty steep, but the view was great. Saw egrets, blue herons, armadillos, and a deer out on the trails and the boardwalk. The buffalo were out, so we got to see them as well. I'm new to hiking, so saying that this is the best hike I've done yet may not be saying much. Still, we plan to go back to try and do the trails we didn't get to this time.
Wish I'd seen armadillos ...
Elm Fork Preserve - 9/1/2008  [View Log Page]
Rating: 4stars Difficulty: 1star Solitude: 4stars
Distance: 1.00 Mile Duration: N/A
This is a nice little trail for something so nearby, though I wouldn't go miles out of the way to see it. But Carrollton has done a very good job with the preserve. There were only 3 other people, which I attribute to it being Labor Day. I can fight through the nearby traffic, but the shooting range was a little disconcerting! Once we figured out that we weren't about to be shot things improved. Since it's just a few miles down the road from us, we'll definitely be back.
