Mission Bay & Fiesta Island
Mission Bay Park [Hiking] - 10/30/2019  [View Log Page]
Rating: 2stars Difficulty: 3stars Solitude: 1star
Distance: 14.01 Miles Duration: 6 hours, 37 minutes

My wife and I did an extended walk along Mission Bay to build our endurance, including Fiesta Island, out to Sea World and back.  Mission Bay is one of San Diego's premiere recreation spots, both on land and water.  This is a great place to walk, jog, bike or skate.  Dogs, however, are not allowed during daylight hours.  In the water, you can boat, jetski, water ski or swim.

My wife and I hiked Fiesta Island as a part of a longer walk along Mission Bay.  You have to walk along the shoulder and the road is narrow, so you have to stay alert.  You can read the details of our entire walk here.

Horseshoe Peak Loop
Horseshoe Peak Trail [Hiking] - 10/22/2019  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3stars Difficulty: 3point5stars Solitude: 4point5stars
Distance: 9.42 Miles Duration: 7 hours, 57 minutes

My wife and I hiked up and over Horseshoe Peak in an effort to do some elevation training.  The trail was steep and slippery in several areas, especially coming down the hill just noth of Skydive San Diego.  We had the entire trail to ourselves, not seeing anyone else except a Border Patrol jeep.  Due to our slow pace and the short days, we had to walk the last 3 miles along Otay Lakes Road in the dark with my headlamp.

Otay River Valley
Otay River Valley Trail [Hiking] - 10/17/2019  [View Log Page]
Rating: 2stars Difficulty: 2point5stars Solitude: 2stars
Distance: 12.85 Miles Duration: 6 hours, 48 minutes

My wife and I decided to thru-hike the Otay River Valley, starting at Otay Lakes County Park all the way to the Palm Ave Trolley Station near I-5.  The hardest part of the hike was trying to figure out how to get started.  We ran into a lot of fenced in "No Trespassing" areas, but we talked to some Park employees and they authorized us to go into those areas since we were hiking.  We also learned that the Otay River Valley is currently being developed and will be open to the public in another year or so.  In that light, my wife and I felt lucky to be one of the first to go through.

The hike was only difficult because of the distance involved.  There are a number of informal trails on both sides of the river with many places to go from one side to the other.  Sadly, there are a number of homeless people living in tents and trees all along the river.
