Of all the hikes I have done there is something special about the Rancherias Trail.
4 of us went in late April 04. It was warm through the days and cool evenings.
The trail is hard! loose shale and lots of ups and downs. Water is limited but the springs are reliable. I would carry ample water and filter spring water.
The most solitude ever expeienced and the most awesome views. Don't be afraid of it just plan wisely!

Hiked two days between the state parks. With side trails and State Park trails I did 34 miles. I went throught the week and saw 1 person (on the trail) in two days. That was a bike rider near the park. Really enjoyed the scenery and solitude. Shade shelters were great to have a cup of tea and change clothing when it rained. Soil got a bit sandy near nails creek where more weekend horse activity happens. I plan on going again real soon.
