I've taken my six-year-old on segments of this trail several times. This time we walked from the eastern end in Lion's Park and headed towards downtown, approximately at the halfway point of the trail.After crossing the bridge downtown we were surprised to find a platoon of WWII German soldiers, complete with mauser kar rifles and kubelwagens, camped on either side of the trail. They were part of a re-enactment weekend. We also saw a number of bicyclists and hikers along the way. This is a great family and/or fitness trail.

We took the Shinnery Ridge Trail in the back corner of the park. It was a fall weekday (date is approximate). We didn't see any other hikers or vehicles at the trailhead. The hike wanders gently through medium sized trees and several clearings. the back end of the trail nears the park border. The last segment of the trail is paved and handicap accessible. A leisurely stroll should still take an hour at most.
Meridian is a small park, but quite fun. There are few campsites and they fill up quick on the weekends. The fishing isn't too bad either.

I wanted to visit Tawakoni after hearing that a group of spiders had built a huge web along one of the trails. It was worth the trip. The trails are mostly wooded, relatively flat, and well-maintained with one large meadow near the trailhead.The trails wander close to the shore, providing many places to fish or stop and enjoy the view. My main concern about the park was that the shore really appears to be eroding quickly.
We didn't camp, but the camping areas looked nice. They each had a concrete pad and enough room between sites for a comfortable level of privacy. I think this is a newer park and may be better developed in coming years. If driving up from Dallas, I recommend the Blue Bird Cafe in Wills Point on your way too or from the park.

Tyler State Park - Blackjack Nature Trail

We hiked the trail around the lake. The terrain varies quite a bit. It passes by the park store, swimming area, and trailer camping ground. It also crosses a long dam and wanders up and down through wooded areas with large, mature trees. There are several wooden walkways covering some of the marshier areas. It was an enjoyable hike, but might be a bit much for younger children.
