How did teen hikers get so lost in the wilderness while still being able to see Los Angeles skyline?

Lost for days within sight and sound of Los Angeles all around them. Their forefather pioneers must be proud!

Ha! I saw this story update as well and thought of posting this. It certainly answers a lot of questions about how this could have happened or how absolutely stupid these two had to be.
