Shack
There was a little shelter on the Mexican side of the river showing the level of poverty in which some people live. I never saw the inhabitant, but he had placed hiking sticks and other wares our for sale along the trail. (Photo by Blaze)

Good river access

Nice way to get to the river. Short and relatively easy. A few stretches to climb but managable. I found it a bit underwhelming. The promise of a sand slide at the end was a disappointment. The climb to the top looked difficult and the people attempting to slide appeared to have to scoot their way down. We met a nice  older couple who had worked at the park 50 years ago who said there used to be much more sand. We could see plenty of rocks poking through the "slide" where they said there wasn't any when they worked there.

Awesome view of the canyon. Its a shame that it narrows down so fast and you can't hike in any further. I guess a canoe or raft is in order if you want to see the canyon in depth.

It was nice

Didn't feel all that safe there at the border and it is true, they never patrol the border, they patrol US 90 2 hours north.  Well worth checking out.  It is Big Bend so it must get at least a 4.

A River Trail, But Not As Nice As I Had Hoped

This is a short hike that takes you back into the Boquillas Canyon. It skirts the river and ends in a series of sand hills and cave weathered cliffs. The hike is not that spectacular and I was saddened to see a shanty shack across the river on the Mexican side.

Nearby (by car) is the Boquillas Overlook. It affords a nice view of the Rio Grande river. I was dismayed to see about 6-8 illegal aliens getting ready to cross the river into the park. I wanted to call the Park HQ so they could notify the Border Patrol, but I couldn’t get any cell phone coverage out there. The Border Patrol really needs to position some agents in the park because I could hear a lot of the illegal immigrants talking to each other on the two-way radio coordinating their plans. It is a good example of what the USA must do to control the flow of illegal immigrants.

My father (60 years old) and I did this hike after the Emory Peak hike in the morning. It was great to relax and drive out to Boquillas Canyon (about 40 minutes from the Basin), then walk into the canyon at the South end of the park. Very scenic place similar to Santa Elena Canyon on the North end of the park. We also saw a river rafting group navigating their way into the canyon. This is always entertaining to watch novices attempt to keep their canoes/kayaks going straight. Lastly, there is some entrepreneur selling walking sticks for $5 bucks US. Could make a great souvenir.

Second hike down this canyon. I enjoy the diverse trail along the way. Rocky, Babboo covered, sandy all in one trail.

If you have to pick a river canyon go to Santa Elena on the other side of the park.
