I hiked the trails at Lake Whitney State Park on my way to a weekend group hike of Cleburne State Park and Dinosaur Valley State Park.  You can read my logs of those two other parks here and here, respectively.

Lake Whitney State Park has two trails:

  • Two Bridges Trail (0.9 miles)
  • Towash Forest Trail (1.1 miles)

I will describe each separately for clarity so that preceding logs by other members can be put into context.

The Two Bridges Trail is essentially a narrow, looping nature trail on the west side of the State Park just past the Recreation Hall that takes you through some forest areas interspersed by cactus and grass and takes you across two bridges and close to a section of Lake Whitney.  There is a sign at the trailhead, but no others.  They're not needed since the trail is a short loop with no intersections.

The Towash Forest Trail is a wide hike/bike trail on the east side of the State Park (just beyond campsites 124-130) in the shape of a lollipop.  The linear portion of the trail takes you out to the loop.  Along the way you'll pass a Wildlife Observation Blind in an open grassy area.  The rest of the trail is a "lawnmower cut" loop that takes you along another section of Lake Whitney.  This trail has a sign at a trailhead, but no others.  They're really not needed as the trail is a simple "lollipop".

As for Lake Whitney itself, it is a nice, scenic lake for water sports or pure enjoyable viewing.  The park offers nice campsites along the lake.
