Wapiti Trail

The Wapiti Trail is basically a trail that goes up a hill and around a mountain. It is supposedly popular with deer and elk hunters. I did not find the trail particularly scenic or interesting, but the elevation change did provide a good workout.

Vista Grande Nature Trail

The Vista Grande Nature Trail is a short loop trail that goes up/down a hill. At the top elevation, there is a scenic overlook. A paper interpretive tour guide is available at the trailhead. Frankly, I found this trail boring and would not recommend it.

Deer Run Trail

The Deer Run Trail runs up/down hill. It is fairly strenuous as it involves 750 feet of elevation change, but it is not particularly scenic. One trailhead starts at the Soda Pocket Campground at the other trailhead starts across the street from the Lake Alice Campground.

Pondarosa Ridge, Lake Maloya, Opportunity and Little Horse Mesa Trails

This log covers my hike of the Pondarosa Ridge, Lake Maloya, Opportunity and Little Horse Mesa Trails. Some parts of this hike were strenuous and involves a lot of elevation change. The hike was very scenic and actually took me across the state line into Colorado near Dorothy Lake. Little Horse Mesa was bigger than I thought. The trail was not easy to find, so I walked cross country through the tall grass on top of the mesa hoping there were no snakes. The ground was wet and muddy. The views from the mesa were very scenic.

River Walk, Coal Camp, Mines #2 & #3 and Lake Alice Trails

This log covers my hike of the River Walk, Coal Camp, Mines #2 & #3 and Lake Alice Trails. I started my hike at the Ranger Station, taking the River Walk Trail. I then branched off to the Coal Camp Trail. You an pick up a free interpretative brochure of the Coal Camp Trail at the Ranger Station that will help provide a lot of interesting history of the camp and mines. Additionally, there are a lot of educational signs posted along the trail that detail the history of the area. After hiking up to Mines #2 and #3, I descended down to the Lake Alice Trail and took it out to Lake Alice. I returned along the paved road.
