Nearing the top
The trail is fairly steep and rugged near the top. Trekking poles help.

Comments:

To continue our elevation training, my wife and I did both the South and North Fortuna Peaks as part of our 5 Peak Challenge.  These were peaks #2 and #3 for us (peak #1 was Kwaay Paay Peak last week).  We first ascended South Fortuna Peak, which is not that tall, but it was fairly steep and challenging near the top.  It was pretty much a class 4 climb and using trekking poles was very helpful.  Once we got to the top of South Fortuna, we walked across the saddle and up to the top of the taller North Fortuna Peak since it was fairly closeby.  Coming down from North Fortuna was also steep and challenging.  Once again, trekking poles were invaluable.  The entire area is exposed so take a lot of water and watch out for snakes.  The Mission Trails Regional Park is a "tangled mess" of trails running everywhere, but overall the signage is very good and there is a good printed map available at the trailheads.
